A multidisciplinary group of researchers including Dr John Antoniou, M.D., Ph.D., Andrew Karaplis,M.D. Fackson Mwale (Ph.D.), and David Zukor M.D., explore bone aging at the clinical and basic science level. Dr. Karaplis’s lab focuses on the neuroendocrine basis of osteoporosis. Dr. John Antoniou’s group is largely focused on exploring metal ion release into the blood stream in elderly patients with metal on metal prosthesis. This is important work because these metals can affect anti-oxidants in macrophages, among a number of effects. He also holds two CIHR grants to pursue Quantitative MRI as a diagnostic tool in investigating the spinal disc matrix, and other aspects of disc tissue engineering. Dr. Fackson Mwale’s lab conducts cutting-edge research on tissue engineering of the intervertebral disc.
