The Epidemiology Axis, under the leadership of Dr. Samy Suissa, includes 27 Principal Investigators, as well as 28 associates active in various aspects of clinical and evaluative epidemiology research. Since 2010, the principal investigators have published more than 500 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and have obtained more than $21 million in funding for their research as senior investigators, the majority of which came from the CIHR, and more than $75 million as co-investigators. Researchers are linked by a common interest in epidemiological research with the goal of improving clinical practice and healthcare.Researchers apply cutting-edge epidemiological methods to study the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of disease. They also contribute to the improvement and innovation of epidemiological and statistical methods necessary for the rigorous conduct of this research, which have direct relevance to clinical practice and cut across disciplines.Specific research themes include:1. Clinical epidemiology;2. Pharmaco-epidemiology; and3. Genetic epidemiology.The Axis is home to the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology, which was founded in 1992 as part of the creation of the network of clinical epidemiology units across all McGill teaching hospitals. Its mission is to improve the health of individuals and populations through clinical and epidemiological research. Investigators in this area focus on cardiovascular, infectious and rheumatic diseases, as well as reproduction and cancer.The LDI is the national headquarters for the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES). Led by Dr. Suissa, CNODES has assembled top researchers from across Canada to undertake collaborative, multi-year studies to gauge the effects and safety of prescription drugs on those who use them. Although these medications have been approved for use by the public, there has been no way to determine their practical, long-term effects on consumers - until now. |
