Dr. Ernesto Schiffrin Named Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association

Dr. Ernesto L. Schiffrin, Distinguished James McGill Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Medicine at McGill University, Physician-in-Chief in the Department of Medicine at the Jewish General Hospital, Director of the Cardiovascular Prevention Centre, and Director of the Hypertension and Vascular Research Unit at the Lady Davis Institute, has been named a 2021 Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association (AHA).

This prestigious designation recognizes scientists who have made extraordinary contributions to cardiovascular and stroke research. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a science volunteer by the AHA. 

Dr. Schiffrin is one of six individuals who will be honoured as AHA Distinguished Scientists during the Association’s Scientific Sessions in Boston in November.

Dr. Schiffrin’s research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of vascular disease and hypertension and their treatment. He is author of over 600 peer-reviewed publications, many book chapters, and is editor of four books on the molecular and clinical aspects of vascular disease and hypertension.

Over the years, Dr. Schiffrin has received numerous awards. The most recent include the 2016 Margolese National Heart Disorders Prize, the 2017 Prix Galien Canada - Research Award, the Distinguished James McGill Professor award in 2019, which recognizes a late-career scholar's sustained scholarship of world-class caliber, international leadership and outstanding research record, and the 2021 Franz Volhard Award of the International Society of Hypertension. He was appointed Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.) in July 2010.
