Dr. Gerald Batist named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
The Lady Davis Institute of the Jewish General Hospital is proud that Dr. Gerald Batist, Director of the Segal Cancer Centre, was named a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). Fellows are elected following a rigorous peer review procedure that recognizes them for their substantial contribution to health science.

“Dr. Batist is a distinguished scientist, whose presence has elevated clinical practice and basic research in oncology at the JGH to the absolute highest level,” said Dr. Roderick McInnes, Director of the Lady Davis Institute. “He has been a driving force behind our efforts to discover new pathways and biomarkers leading to more effective treatments against cancer.”

The Academy cited Dr. Batist for having “led on many fronts that improved cancer therapy, including the study of cellular detoxification in therapeutic resistance to anti-cancer treatment, pre-clinical and early phase clinical trials of novel therapeutics.”

Dr. Batist is a strong proponent of the emerging field of personalized medicine, which intends to identify the genetic make-up underlying an individual’s disease in order to discover the most effective therapeutic targets.

The Minda de Gunzberg Professor of Oncology at McGill University, Dr. Batist co-founded the Quebec – Clinical Research Organization in Cancer (Q-CROC) to establish a province-wide translational and clinical research infrastructure in oncology. Through his research, he has made significant contributions to the development of new cancer treatments. He leads a highly successful laboratory and clinical research program, which has been credited with over 180 scientific publications and a number of book chapters. He has nurtured the development of several multidisciplinary programs that have been highly innovative and are among the first of their kind in Canada, and has trained many scientists and clinical oncologists. At the same time, he maintains an active clinical oncology practice.
