The Jewish General Hospital Research Ethics Committee The Research Ethics Committee (REC) at the Jewish General Hospital, a McGill Affiliated Hospital, reviews all research protocols involving human subjects conducted by hospital staff.The Chair of the REC, Dr. Carolyn Ells, PhD, the Chief of the Research Ethics Office, Ms. Franca Cantini , MScN, the Assistant Chief, Ms. Julie Samuël LL.M. and the Chair of the Science Review Committee, Dr. Phyllis Zelkowitz, Ed.D. are available to answer questions and provide educational materials.The information provided here is abridged from the JGH REC website. For more information please consult the JGH REC website or contact the Research Ethics Office at local 2445.Submissions are processed one of five ways: Delegated Review, Chart Review, McGill Approved studies, MSSS Review and Full Board Review. Most studies originating from the LDI are either Delegated or Full Board:

1. Delegated Review: Studies can be reviewed in a delegated fashion if the study does not involve more than minimal risk. The standard of minimal risk is commonly defined as follows: if potential subjects can reasonably be expected to regard the probability and magnitude of possible harms implied by participation in the research to be no greater than those encountered by the subject in those aspects of his or her everyday life that relate to the research then the research can be regarded as within the range of minimal risk. Delegated approval is granted by the Chair and the protocol is then presented for corroborative approval at the next Research Ethics Committee Meeting. Delegated Application Form
