Raquel Aloyz serves as a Principal Investigator at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research (LDI) at the Jewish General Hospital since 2003. Her driving force over the years has been the patients, whose generosity—in donating their blood—fuels her work and that of her colleagues.
In addition Professor Aloyz contributes actively in reviewing manuscripts and grant applications from national and international organizations, participates in mentoring programs at McGill University, and chairs the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research’s Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (EDI).
Raquel Aloyz’s research focuses on the metabolic aspects of therapeutic resistance in cancer, with a special emphasis on hematologic malignancies. The goal is to identify the specific metabolic characteristics of malignant cells, as this knowledge can be harnessed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Her team discovered that subgroups of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) with poor prognostic factors (del17p or del11q) exhibit metabolic characteristics different from those of other CLL subgroups, which render them more sensitive to specific clinically relevant drugs. In this context, Professor Aloyz’s team for example, demonstrated that ibrutinib, a drug used to treat various hematologic malignancies, disrupts metabolic homeostasis, forcing these cells to use fatty acids as an energy source for survival. In recent years, Raquel Aloyz has focused on collaborative research to uncover metabolic vulnerabilities in acute myeloid leukemia.
