Snapshot

My goal is to improve the health of Canadians and others by generating the real-world evidence needed to balance the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs. I use large, population-based databases to conduct rigorous pharmacoepidemiologic research on clinically important and policy relevant questions — particularly around drugs used to treat cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. My work spans two complementary themes: comparative effectiveness and safety. I complement these database studies with knowledge syntheses, applied methodological research, and clinical trials. By providing clinicians, patients, and regulators with the evidence needed for informed decision-making, my program has a direct public health impact in Canada and internationally.

Major Research Activities

My research program uses population-based databases and cutting-edge pharmacoepidemiologic methods to study medication comparative effectiveness and safety in real-world settings. It is particularly focused on cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

I am a Steering Committee member and CPRD Team Lead of the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES), a pan-Canadian network that addresses urgent drug safety and effectiveness questions for Health Canada, Canada’s Drug Agency, and provincial/territorial drug plan managers.

I complement my database studies with knowledge syntheses (systematic reviews and meta-analyses) and applied methodological research.

I am the methods lead of the CIHR-funded “Aggressive Smoking Cessation Therapy Among People at Elevated Cardiovascular Risk (ASAP) Trial”, a multi-centre clinical trial that assesses the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of aggressive smoking cessation therapy among people at elevated cardiovascular risk
